Jellyfish & Flowers

This piece is done by the traditional Japanese resist dyeing technique called "Yuzen" which uses a rice-paste to outline the motif, which is then dyed by hand. This technique was very laborious and a lot more difficult than my professor made it look. Although the end result is something that could be achieved digitally it was overall an interesting process to learn and made me really understand the value pre-planning a design fully from start to finish as there is no way to fix mistakes.

The concept of this piece is inspired by photographs I saw where the artist had combined imagery of vivid, almost psychedelic flowers with jellyfish. I found the movement of both to be so elegant that I made my own interpretation of it. When photographed blowing in the wind, the movement and lightness of the silk gives life to the motifs, making it seem as if they too are floating.
