Contemporary Kimono

My goal when coming to Tokyo University of the Arts' textile department was to learn about shibori, this traditional technique that makes use of both colour and texture. After experimenting around with different methods of shibori, I wanted to create a modernised kimono-shaped dress. I found a pattern that fit what I was looking for and pleated, stitched and tied the fabric in specific places to achieve this result.

Coming from a digital-print background it was a challenge to plan out where I wanted each motif to fall and to make sure everything was tied up securely enough as mistakes are not as easily fixed.
